Confessions of a Gourmand by Tom Bruno

Anyone can slay a dragon, but who knows how to cook one?

Van d’Allamitri is destined to become the world’s most famous chef— if only he can survive his childhood first! Son of a Shan-li restaurateur and a merchant from the great city of Varo, young Van is torn between honoring the culinary traditions of his overbearing mother and following in the footsteps of his cosmopolitan but ne’er-do-well father. As he finds his way, Van will face many dangers and cook many meals, all the while unraveling a mystery that pits his sleepy home village against the might of a powerful empire.

Confessions of a Gourmand is a 107,000-word novel about family, fantasy, and food set in a deliciously imagined world where dragons are not only real, but on the menu as well.

Note: Confessions of a Gourmand contains some harsh language.

Editor’s First Impression

Writing is clean, voice consistent (if not quite vivid).  A bit slow, at least at first, but that seems to be the style.  If you like descriptive narrative, full of cultural elements and a life’s story, it’s worth a look.
