RED HOUSE DOWN

Interesting world, boring characters.

By Whyknotzoidberg, author of Hotfoot

Dec 1, 2015: First thing to get out of the way, is that the serial is written in the present tense. I personally dislike this, but I know others don’t, so keep that in mind as you read this review. Oh yea also review swap yada yada yada.

I wish I could like this story. I really do. The world seems cool, the powers/magical abilities/psychic attacks are intriguing and I really want to know more about them. It’s a shame I don’t give a rats ass about any of the characters besides a comically poorly written lackey. The MCs inner dialogue feels a bit off somehow, but I might just chalk that up to the present, but at least she is tolerable. Her main companion and friend rapidly switches from annoying me to creeping me out and back again. Everyone else just seemed to just be there. The one notable exception is the queen, who seems like an interesting and dangerous threat, but, so far, she seems to only speak in cliches. Her presence is very well written, and her mental attacks were tense and scary which was good. All in all, I’m looking forward to hearing more from her.

The combat is where this story really shines, however. The author uses his/her present tense narration to its fullest extent, bringing the struggles to life. Once the action stops, then other flaws begin to sink in, but for a brief moment the story was really cool. I’m looking forward to this serial improving over the next few months and I’ll update this review accordingly. Until than, maybe skip it.
