In Medias Res by Jack Finch

The adventures of Father Dylan Shute, a fairly heretical Catholic exorcist and vampire hunter, along with an eclectic cast of coworkers in his Secret Vatican Order and outside of it, battle the forces of evil, paisley, and the end of the world.

Note: In Medias Res contains some graphic sexual content, graphic violence, and harsh language.

Editor’s First Impression

The writing is solid so far.  Agencies and shadow branches of the Church are popular right now so this should find an audience.  The idea of a young, apprentice exorcist is kind of fun, especially when he meets up with old friends who don’t know he became a priest, at a gaming convention.  Worth a look.

I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Memento Vivere’

I started off with the three part, short story called ‘Memento Vivere’ and chuckled my way through to the end. There is an irreverent humour here that is very engaging and comes entirely from the main character, Father Dylan Shute himself. The author isn’t kidding that he’s mildly heretical and very unorthodox. Every chapter had memorable, quotable parts but I’ll let you discover those yourself. Even the so-called shadow agencies of the Church (as mentioned by Linda) manage to be tongue-in-cheek and yet the humour always strikes the right notes, avoiding being too comic given the various situations. The writing style is perfectly readable and balanced between narrative, dialogue and action. The author also manages to include a whole bevy of lesser characters from a whole variety of denominations (and faiths) without showing any particular bias. All in all, a well balanced, well written and enjoyable story that would deliver an hours good reading. There are also more stories that I will definately be going back to read.
