I love going to the movie theatre. My dad had a rule—we only went to epic movies. He didn’t see the point in paying good money to watch a small-time comedy that we’d be able to watch on television in a few years. Because he was picky, we went to great movies. Jurassic Park, Star Wars, the Lord of the Rings, the blockbusters that made money and impressed fans.
Now I go to kids’ movies with my toddlers, or the occasional date movie with my wife. I’m sure as my kids age that the rule will become more like my dad’s, but right now we just saw How to Train Your Dragon. That’s life.
However, my favourite part of the movie theatre experience is still the same—the Teaser Trailers. You get to see the best scenes from upcoming movies, a good idea about what you want to watch, and honestly, those two minute teasers are EXCITING.
(sometimes the actual movies are a let down, but teasers have excitement down to a science)
Anyway, 30 pieces of Silver is a bunch of flash fiction that acts just like a teaser trailer. I get interested, I get excited, and then it’s over. They’re all supposed to take place in the same story world, but they’re barely connected. The vignettes are well-written, which really means I want to see what the writer could do with an actual story. And I mean truly well-written, you can sense things about characters, setting, atmosphere and tension in a very short amount of time.
This is just a tease, and I want more. Whether or not the teaser can deliver more is up to the future.
