A serialized novel, updating thrice weekly.

Bursting onto the web serial scene in March, 2008, “An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom” already has a thousand daily readers addicted to it seven short months later, and a bustling online community that stays as much for author MeiLin Miranda’s conversations with readers as for the story.  This ongoing web serial brings intimacy to the epic of a royal family, in a style reminiscent of Jane Austen with the erotic intensity of Laurell K. Hamilton.

Sweeping through a thousand years, “An Intimate History” follows the story of a royal family as it is told to the latest and possibly last heir to its throne.  This is the history the history books leave out—royal loves and lusts that changed the course of events.  Only one book in the royal library has the whole story:  “An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom.”  This is no ordinary book; its enchantment forces the listener to experience the stories as if he were there.  The series follows Prince Temmin of Tremont and his mysterious tutor the Teacher over the course of ten years, from young adulthood to Temmin’s coronation as king.  Will Temmin be the one who revives the family magic and averts a prophesied disaster to the kingdom?  Or will it be the end of the Tremontine empire?

MeiLin Miranda is a good writer, and extremely creative.  Not only does she have a lively imagination, she also comes up with impressive ways to involve her audience, and designed a great website.  Individual chapters of her ongoing story can be humorous, erotic, thrilling and intriguing.  Her description of clothing and scenery is elegant and evocative.

However, for all of that, I don’t understand her enthusiastic fan base.  For a fantasy novel, it rarely uses magic.  For an erotic story, the sex is a little dull in comparison to say, "Tales of MU," where the author (AE) avoids being as graphic as erotica.  For a political history, it has less intrigue than "An Empire of Law," and as a character study, it has less interest than "Alisiyad."

Why am I comparing "An Intimate History" to other online stories?  Because I think part of the story’s appeal might be in the fact that it tries to encompass so many interesting possibilities in one place.  But as a reader, my lack of interest stems from this same fact.  There is no real story arc to follow, because the story runs in so many directions at once. These other stories do some of the same things in a much more focused way.  "Tales of MU" is going in as many directions, if not more, yet never feels as scattered as this "Intimate History" that leaves me feeling distanced from the characters.

Prince Temmin’s character is dull, a flighty spoiled aristobrat who goes wherever the current pulls him.  The histories of his ancestors have more interesting characters and plotlines, but they are episodes against the backdrop of his life.

Personally, Temmin distracts from the histories, and the histories distract from Temmin’s life.  I would have designed the story differently, offering the histories as bonus chapters or as an entirely separate story that runs parallel to Temmin’s narrative.  Mixing the two creates a mixed up tale, that I just can’t quite sink my teeth into.

rating onrating onrating onrating onrating on An Intimate History Indeed

An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom has everything that every good fantasy story needs:  magic,  prophecies, mysterious — apparently immortal – mentors and curses just to mention a few.  But unlike most fantasy stories, there is no apparent Quest – it is simply the history of the Kingdom.  Not the dull sort of history in text books that are nothing but dates and other unmemorable facts, but the story of the people who shaped the course of a Kingdom.

An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom is also a story about the “current” rulers of the realm, focusing mostly on Prince Temmin with forays into the point of views of some of the secondary characters.

These two “histories” intertwine and complement each other.

An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom is also a fantasy with “all the good parts left in.”  The sex does not detract from the narrative, but only adds to it.  A word of warning:  some of the sex is non-consensual, but it is never graphic.

As a whole, An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom is a good story about love, honor, loyalty, and growing up, but it starts a little on the slow side.  I found it difficult to relate to Prince Temmin, finding that the “history” portions of the story were more interesting.  Even though An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom is well into its second volume, I am still uninterested in the prince’s character and I can only hope that as the story progresses that he will grow more as a character.

I would also like to mention that Meilin Miranda has done an excellent job constructing the site – it is easy to navigate and professional.

rating onrating onrating onrating onrating on Story and sex. What more can you ask for?

I’ve been following this story nearly from the beginning and it’s only gotten better the more Mei has written.  Considering this is her self-professed "first attempt at fiction," I’m going to have to give her a standing ovation.  She certainly puts other, more seasoned, writers to shame in this regard.

Temmin, the story’s main character, is an absolute doll.  He can be a little scary at times since his father has a tendency to sneak through in his personality but really, when comparing the two, they’re pretty opposite.  Thus far, this is Temmin’s story, especially the first book but being in the middle of the second, it hops around from character to character, giving different insight to different events.  In the second, Sedra gets a view, what with her impending . . . trade but Temmin is still an equal player as well.

The beginning of book one gets off to a little slow of a start but once the young prince arrives at the Keep, it just doesn’t stop!  This particular serial is a frame piece, a story within a story, so while we have the "present day" events going on, we’re getting a secondary story usually via Temmin’s education from Teacher.  Of course, sex is just out of reach of front and center in both frames and it creates for double the fun!

Some may say the sex is there simply to have it.  Mei is of the mind that sex is a part of life and thus a part of her story.  She certainly doesn’t shy away from anything but don’t confuse that with smut.  It’s not.  It’s just something she’s very open about and a gander through the comments columns can tell you that she’s been opening a lot of eyes to her readers’ own wants and needs with her work.  The sex can be explicit as well as uncomfortable at times but I think it’s something that’s always been handled gracefully and not pornographically regardless of the situation.

Her characters are rich and multi-dimensional and the repercussions of their actions can be felt as you read.  Some of the situations she’s placed them in has readers vying for real world replicas (the Lover’s Temple, for example) and the discussions her writing elicits any writer would be envious of.  She’s certainly done a good job in creating a bevy of faithful readers and I can only hope she draws in more as the story goes on.  It certainly deserves it.

While this is labeled as a fantasy story, it’s one that uses the genre as more of a background tool than something that’s up front and center.  Magic is lingering, rarely used except by a few in this work and the focus is certainly on the characters, their development and what’s going on in their lives.  They live in a world where magic is barely spoken of.  It’s not necessarily taboo but it’s certainly not prevalent.  Actions of the characters are oftentimes more magical than any blatant use of magic that could be thrown in there.

The site is certainly designed to be user friendly and MeiLin does her best to make it so since it’s what she does.  She works to not only bring attention to her own piece but to other web serialists as well as a means to further promote the craft.  She’s a good person with an awesome story that everyone should be reading.

Take this one as another "don’t miss" story.  You’ll regret it if you do, if for nothing more than the sex tips that Cosmo would be vying for!

rating onrating onrating onrating onrating on I’m not clever enough to title this bad boy…

My serial-reading experience online is fairly limited.  I’ll confess that.  However, I find An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom to be engaging, delightfully articulate, and not nearly as "mixed up" or "scattered" as another reviewer did.

Temmin, the overarching protagonist, is an adolescent crown prince on the cusp of manhood (in more ways than one).  The story is, in part, a character study on him, and in part, something greater.  It links Temmin and (so far) his family to historical events from the setting in a somewhat innovative fashion, a textbook that Temmin studies from that is alive, giving depth and humanity to what might otherwise be drear historical examples.

The erotic writing is different from what I have found at other sites, in a way I’m having a hard time qualifying at present.

The beginning is slow, but the pace has improved appreciably.

As Sonja Nitschke remarks, the website itself is well-maintained.

To start, this is an absolutely beautifully written serial novel; if not for its adult content, I have little doubt that it would be sweeping the greater world by storm with its fascinating story, eloquent prose, and masterful development of character.

It’s hard to summarize what makes a story that grabs you "good."  When so many nuances come together to make a lovely experience, it’s almost impossible to define them individually, and doing so makes them less than they originally were.

Needless to say, MeiLin Miranda captured my interest first with her professionally constructed ads, then her artful first chapter, and immediately after with her easy, sensual writing and well-paced plot.  It’s worth a read, whether you’re looking for a lightly fantastic drama, a star-crossed romance, or a fun romp through as many types of and positions in sexuality as any could wish.

rating onrating onrating onrating onrating on Audacious scope, fascinating world

This is a truly epic tale told in the most intimate way, through the eyes of the people, great and small, who live in the world of the Tremont Empire and beyond.

Imagine being a royal prince and having the chance to not just read, but to experience the TRUE story of your family’s history.  The good and bad bits that are left out of the history books.

This is a coming of age story that doesn’t hinge solely on the young prince.  Yes, Temmin’s is the main story line, but it’s more of an ensemble piece of work where the other supporting characters—parents, sisters, servants, lovers, and the Teacher—are as fully realized as the young prince, and interesting each in their own right.

What makes this story truly unique for me is the interactive relationship Meilin Miranda has with her readers.  She responds to comments early and often.  She gives in her replies more information about the characters, the world, her process, and herself than you could ever get in a more traditional format.  Registered members earn points by posting, promoting the site, and other activities and when the poster has reached 50 points they may request a bonus story of their choosing.  How’s THAT for interactive?

If you enjoy historical/period, fantasy/sci-fi, or romance genres, all with a little sorcery thrown in from time to time, you’ll probably enjoy Intimate History.

rating onrating onrating onrating onrating on All history texts should be like this!

Alas, in our mundane world, we have to rely on static printed texts with one, presumably and occasionally demonstrably biased, viewpoint. To be able to know with certainty the thoughts, feelings, motivations and surrounding minutae of the pivotal moments in history might truly allow us to not repeat the mistakes of the past. Temmin, Sedra and to a lesser extent, Ellika have this amazing resource - a magical history, powered by mysterious figures who have been there to see it all, and yet the narrative seems to be not distorted by their viewpoints.

Is it reassuring that central ruling figures throughout history are proven to be merely human? Not when the thread comes back to modern days and the present King and Queen. Yet the promise of Temmin, Sedra and Ellika, and the interest shown by deities and other magical protagonists gives hope that this time . . .

Beautifully, absorbingly written, multiple well-fleshed characters and cultures, reasonably frequent posting - well worth a look.
