I love the blending of traditional fantasy elements into the science fiction setting.  It could have been cheesy, but the author makes it work.  I love the descriptions—they make the world really come alive for me.  Little details like the color of the blushing on a species with blue skin, or one character complaining internally about how hot and stuffy he is in the elaborate coat he wears while never really thinking of just taking the thing off to be more comfortable.  There is some "technospeak" as another reviewer put it, but again, it’s a detail that adds to the world without disrupting the flow of the narrative or breaking my immersion into the world.
