The writing in the first chapter is quite solid.  Very good "Victorian" voice with a touch of wry humour.  The illustrations are a nice touch.  No sign of the street-thief mentioned in the description, but then the first chapter is supposed to take place 20 years before the main story.  Looks to be worth a second look.
