Baubles and Broomsticks

An ongoing series, with new episodes monthly.

Being a mutant isn’t all its cracked up to be.  Mary Stevens can’t even take a bath without her abilities raising hell and trying to drown her.  Living with her brothers — and fellow mutants — Greg and Brian, she’s working to understand how their powers relate to the greater world, while trying to discover just how to live a normal life.  Or, well, as normal of a life as a lesbian mutant running an occult shop can hope for.

Baubles and Broomsticks
Lesbians, Mutants, and The Occult.

When I began reading Baubles and Broomsticks, I wasn’t expecting it to be in movie script format, but I found the brief, to-the-pointness of it refreshing.  Morgan also provides a cast page, complete with real life people and that’s always fun.

Only one episode has been posted (not counting the seasonal special), but I am looking forward to reading more (and not just because anything remotely mutant-ish makes me happy).  The mutant concept is fresh and unique, complete with nosebleeds and other unpleasantness.

My one, small complaint would be that it was reminiscent of the Angel/Buffy ‘verse even before it was mentioned in the text.  But again, since only the first episode has been posted, it might be a little too early to be making such judgments.

All in all a good start, and I’ll be looking forward to read more.  Review subject to change, of course, as more is added to the story.

I have to admit that I started to read this Series with a few misconceptions.  My confession probably isn’t going to do me any favours but I feel it is necessary because there could be others out there who have failed to give Baubles and Broomsticks the consideration it deserves.

Firstly, I had difficulty accepting online fiction in script format.  Secondly, I had the bizarre idea that I was not a part of this story’s intended audience.  With that out of the way I’ll get down to the review.

Baubles and Broomsticks is a pleasure to read.  In a way, it is just like settling down to watch a favourite television programme only the action happens in your head and not on the screen.  Please don’t fall into the same trap I did and let the script format put you off – it’s an effortless read!

The characters and their relationships are well defined and although each is very different they gel together well.  The story lines are interesting and the magical/mythical references are well researched – something I appreciate immensely.

I’m not keen on the PDF format, I find it takes away the extra dimension I enjoy when reading a story online.

The ‘Casting’ was lost on me - I could not relate on any level to the Stock Photographs. Added to that, I felt that Helen Mirren was completely miscast as Tanya Zoe . . .

The soundtrack references were a nice touch and it would be a bonus if you could listen to the music while reading.

Do yourself a favour and give this series a chance – you’ll be glad you did.

rating onrating onrating onrating onrating off Mutants in Movie Script Form

Summary: Baubles and Broomsticks is about Mary Stevens, a mutant living with her brothers. Through crazy events, she comes in contact with many different mutants, some good and some bad. She uses her powers to help the authorities track other mutants.

Likes: I wasn’t expecting this to be in script form either and when I do see movie scripts, I’m always turned off because most of the scripts I do happen to come across have nothing but lists of what is going on and unreadable dialogue. And they have an insane amount of things to read. Thankfully, this isn’t that type of story. Even though there are a lot of pages to read, it wasn’t hard to get through because the story and the characters are engaging. I find myself waiting for the next chapter each month and the posting schedule is unique, posting on every full moon. The story is straight to the point and is entertaining because of it. I’m still curious to see where the story is going. I don’t really have any complaints. The story is a little bit campy at times, but does not detract from the story. It reads like a television show, which I believe was the author’s intent. It reminds me of Heroes and X-Men combined together and made for primetime television.

Dislikes: I still have no idea what exactly Mary’s power is as well as her brothers. Mary’s brothers, Greg and Brian, do have powers but they never come into play in the stories. The character sketches are nice and well written, but it doesn’t give me any idea of their abilities. The characters don’t use their abilities enough for me to remember what they do. I’m not really feeling the dream casting, alot of the characters are played by stock photos which for me, defeats the purpose of the dream casting anyway. Many of the characters seem miscast to me. I don’t really see America Ferrera being Mary and many of the principle characters, like I mentioned before, were played by stock photos. At any rate, I don’t really imagine the characters as who they are supposed to be, I just imagine them my own way. A part of me wishes that the characters weren’t given pictures and instead just descriptions of eye color and hair color. The character sketches are really awesome though, I’m inspired by them and I like the concept.

Overall: I enjoy reading this web serial. I find myself eagerly waiting their updates. I like the idea of posting every full moon, but the lack of updates leaves me a bit restless and impatient. I recommend this serial for anyone who is looking for something different from your average web serial. The script format is really daunting, but the story draws the reader in and doesn’t allow for the prose to get overblown with description. It’s concise and straight to the point which as a reader, I admire and enjoy.
