BE STILL MY FORMERLY BEATING HEART

Unique take on the old zombie story?

Well, I have to start out by saying that this one is a bit . . . violent. Even for a zombie story, so that’s saying something. It’s not the amount of violence, but the sheer depth of detail.

So, don’t read if you’re a bit squeamish.

Anyway, I’m not a huge fan of standard zombie stuff, so I wasn’t entirely captured by the first chapter or so, which feels like every other zombie story out there. There are zombies, the heroes, and the poor nobodies who only exist to die in horrible ways and rise again, striking terror into the hearts of their ex-friends.

Interestingly enough, this is the second zombie story I’ve read that uses terrorism/xenophobia as a plot element.(The other being Oasis, a blog novel now published.)

Not far in, however, it takes a unique and darkly humorous turn. The story has not, at this point, advanced far along this line, so it’ll be interesting to see where the author takes this. This is where much of the violent description comes from, but it’s worth enduring just to see how far it’ll go.

The writing itself is tight and the action doesn’t let up. There are small breaks to advance the story or . . . flesh out characters, but every chapter has action of some sort.

The site is little more than a standard template, but is easy to navigate and doesn’t get in the way of the story.

There aren’t any real problems, save the aforementioned violence. It’s not updated that often, with only seven chapters starting in June of last year.

So, if you’re looking for a unique zombie story and are willing to be patient, this might be the one for you.
