My first impression of Beasts of New York was that it was a sort of fun, light read, a little uneven in quality, but definitely readable.
It hooked my attention right away, since I read up to chapter 21 before pausing for a break. However, the story just gets better and better the further you read on. There are thrills, chills, battles, monsters, danger and heroism and non-stop action! There is also more than a little blood and guts, so you might want to avoid Beasts of New York if gore is not your thing
There are a few low spots – the dialogue is weak in a few areas, and the plot becomes a bit slow and somewhat trite mid-book, however the story picks up again so quickly that it hardly matters.
I am admittedly not the biggest fan of web fiction, simply because I find it difficult to become really involved in a story that I have to read from a computer screen. But I got so caught up in the story that I simply could not stop reading. I read through the entire novel in one night.
My initial rating after 21 chapters was three stars, but after finishing, I’ve upgraded that to four stars. I also officially "recommend" this novel to anyone who won’t be immediately turned off by talking animals and the YA-novel feel to the narration.
