Still Building Characters

By MystycalMage, member

Nov 21, 2008: Chatoyant College isn’t quite to the point where the story really takes off. The story is twenty chapters in and is still building the characters and giving the reader an idea of the layout of the most common areas that will be in the story: the dorm room, the campus layout, the paths that seem to go so out of the way . . .  If this story were in a hard copy format, the reader might be wondering where all the action is, but web novels are different in that they won’t be completely over and done with in a year’s time, they will continue to go on.

I said the story is twenty chapters along, but the chapters are pretty short compared to other online novels I have read (such as Tales of MU), in fact the chapters are probably closer to 1/3 or 1/4 of a Tales of MU chapter in word count. But don’t get me wrong, I don’t necessarily see this as a downfall, I see it as allowing the newcomers an easier time to catch up. I’d rather come back three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, when the story is updated) than to have one longer chapter once per week.

The shorter chapters also give plenty of time for discussions among the newest followers of Clare K. R. Miller’s Chatoyant College, which is growing quite rapidly.
