Consider What Becomes of the Ashes by Pixelnyx

A steampunk fantasy of morality, disillusionment and unlikely companionship.

Fleeing his war-ravaged homeland, young Noah arrives in Imperial LaGatta, the city of his boyhood dreams. Vowing never again to fight, Noah earns his wage as a sex worker, but does not know what he wants.

For years his life is sordid and downbeat, his aimless longings repressed by his experiences and the rigidly tiered LaGattan class system. Noah takes a permanent position within an elderly actress’s home, where he meets and loves Penleigh, youngest son of a wealthy LaGattan family, who represents everything Noah felt he should have had: class, wealth, and opportunities.

On the periphery of major events and the Imperial cohort, Noah drifts through Imperial LaGatta’s preparations for conquest of a distant enemy, until the realisation his lover Penleigh will be going to war — and that Penleigh is willing to fight to bring fire back into Noah’s life.

Note: Consider What Becomes of the Ashes contains some graphic sexual content, graphic violence, and harsh language.

Editor’s First Impression

Jun 5, 2011: The narrative voice is a bit cold and detached, but the writing itself is good. It didn’t grab me, but it might the right reader.

An Intersting Tale

By Savannah, member

Dec 16, 2011: The tone of ‘Consider What Became of the Ashes’ was distant, and the story took leaps in time with little warning. It was not confusing, though. In fact, it was quite entertaining. The narrative voice worked well to tell Noah’s tale, and found appropriate avenues to insert details of Noah’s past, which is quite a sad story. Living in a city where status is determined by how high up you live, Noah aims to find his way to the top, taking all the opportunities he can to do so. His [more . . .]

Fascinating city-based steampunk

By Senna Black, member

Jun 18, 2011: Generally, I have so far found this story fascinating and engaging.

The writing is competent, and sets up a strong narrative voice. It is in present tense, which suits the character, mood and steampunk setting well. It is quite a detached voice, but I found that contrasted nicely with the messy, sordid details given about Noah’s life. It gave me a sense of his alienation and detachment, born of the trauma he experienced befpre the start of the story.
