Daron’s Guitar Chronicles by Cecilia Tan

Sex, drugs, rock and roll, and coming out in the 1980s

Daron thought life would get easier after he got away from his parents’ house in New Jersey, thanks to a scholarship to music school in New England. But life is tough when there isn’t enough money to actually live on, you’re underage, and you don’t know where to turn. And is it the best thing that ever happened to you, or the worst, when you get your big break, but your homophobic father shows up on your doorstep? MTV, AIDS, and Reaganomics have all just arrived. What’s next?

Note: Daron’s Guitar Chronicles contains some graphic sexual content and harsh language.

Editor’s First Impression

By Linda Schoales, editor

Dec 11, 2009: The first chapter is solid. The story starts with Daron about to do a set with his new bandmates, who are smoking joints and critiquing his clothes.

Depeche Mode Said it Well: Just Can’t Get Enough

By M.C.A. Hogarth, author of Earthrise

Mar 31, 2010: Can I say anything better than "I started reading this and didn’t stop until I faceplanted on my keyboard at 1 AM"? Probably not, but I’ll try. This is solid writing: grounded in crunchy detail that indicates research and experience on the part of the author, so that you feel you’re getting a real insider’s view (how can you not appreciate someone who knows about Jon Anderson?). It’s compelling from a character standpoint; teen-narrators can get snarky and one-dimensional, but Tan surrounds the narrator in people of various ages, all [more . . .]

Great Inner Dialogue

By intergal, member

Apr 13, 2010: As of writing, I’m about eight chapters into "Daron’s Guitar Chronicles" and I am enjoying it, though I’ve not been quite so consumed by it as some previous reviewers.

The story is set in the mid 80s, and it follows the misadventures of Daron, a young man with who’s trapped in the closet and has a passion for rock music, and he’s been offered a roadie gig by a former paramour who’s already made it big.
