das orbit by leo vladimirsky

space sucks... stay home

The life and times of a disgruntled janitor on a poorly run space station, das orbit is a satire/indulgence of classic science fiction themes.

Note: das orbit contains pervasive harsh language; also, some graphic sexual content and graphic violence.

Editor’s First Impression

By Chris Poirier, editor

Mar 16, 2011: I’m not actually sure how I should rate this, but it definitely belongs on the vetted list, so 3.5 stars it is. The voice is strong and vivid, with lots of snarkā€”and, for once, it’s true blogfic. Definitely worth a look for fans of science fiction and humour.

A blogfic done right.

By TheChivalrousRogue, author of Skyborne

Jan 4, 2014: "Das Orbit" is unique, realistic, fits well into the blogfic motif, and is generally quite amusing.

Unique and Realistic – Angryspaceman has the awesomely sarcastic humor and nihilistic personality that a space janitor stuck on a station would have. It’s a polar opposite to the stereotypical idealistic ‘star trek’ approach to science fiction. I got the sense that while ‘Captain Spacef***’ believes he’s saving the galaxy and banging hot alien chicks, the enlisted ranks putter on with the daily realities of space puke and a**hole coworkers. It really reminds me of the attitude of NCO’s in the army versus patriotic officers. It’s gritty, has a different flavor, and feels real.

Blogfic Motif – It looks and feels like it could be the actual blog of a pissed off janitor. As a blog design it’s adequate, but personally the plain black background is a bit . . . Plain . . . I’d imagine pictures of trash compactors or space sewers would lend greatly to the theme.

Generally Quite Amusing – It’s just plain funny, the janitor’s perspective on the daily monotonies of space. I only say generally because it does have a particular flavor, which not everyone will find appealing.

Critiques – Spicing up the background with space sewers or compactors would help visuals. The janitor is apparently phobic of capitals, which fits into the style, but may be distracting for readers; I wouldn’t recommend changing, just an observation.

In conclusion, if you like your science fiction gritty, sarcastic, and amusing, give "Das Orbit" a shot.
