Diary of a Heretic

A growing collection of stories, updated thrice weekly.

I am a writer and passionate reader of literary fiction.  Diary of a Heretic is where I post work in progress, polished as best I can within a daily time frame, except when stories need a little more development.  On weekends and holidays, you will find excerpts from Diary of a Heretic, a novel I am constantly revising.

I don’t think there’s any question if Kathleen Maher is an excellent writer because, not to put too fine a point on it, she is.  Her writing is clear, sharp, and engaging.

But the plot, I don’t know.  Perhaps it’s because it seems to be highly spiritual in nature as the main character says, "Everyone needs to know and say why they’re alive."  I usually prefer stories other than what this can provide, and that is nobody’s fault but my own.  So if stories like this is your cup of tea, then I highly recommend you take a look because Maher’s writing is definitely worth it.

I’ve been following Kathleen’s bloggistic fiction for over a year now, and I am a big fan. Her writing is unlike any other. I can’t even think who to compare her to, and why bother? Her writing is somehow almost impossibly subtle — she sees beneath the surface always, and this unseen becomes visible in her words, almost tactile.

My advice is simply to dive in. Her writing is so immediate that I think you could start in the middle of one of her stories and immediately get caught up, but if you’re like me then you will want to back up and start from the beginning. Right now she’s coming in to the home stretch of a long novel ("Diary of a Heretic") and is somewhere in the middle of a long story about two very different brothers. Both works are excellent; just dive in.

I have never met Kathleen Maher, however I have been engaged in a hilarious e-mail correspondance with her for many months now, and I can say her e-mails are as much fun as her fiction.

(And I usually don’t even like contemporary fiction!)
