I’ve been following Kathleen’s bloggistic fiction for over a year now, and I am a big fan. Her writing is unlike any other. I can’t even think who to compare her to, and why bother? Her writing is somehow almost impossibly subtle—she sees beneath the surface always, and this unseen becomes visible in her words, almost tactile.
My advice is simply to dive in. Her writing is so immediate that I think you could start in the middle of one of her stories and immediately get caught up, but if you’re like me then you will want to back up and start from the beginning. Right now she’s coming in to the home stretch of a long novel ("Diary of a Heretic") and is somewhere in the middle of a long story about two very different brothers. Both works are excellent; just dive in.
I have never met Kathleen Maher, however I have been engaged in a hilarious e-mail correspondance with her for many months now, and I can say her e-mails are as much fun as her fiction.
(And I usually don’t even like contemporary fiction!)
