DIARY OF A HERETIC

Eclectic, surprising, delightful

This is one of my favorite sites on the web. The writing is of astonishingly high quality, and the stories are always entertaining—sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic, and often quite sexy, without veering into "erotica." In fact, they are hard to classify, as they don’t fit into any genre, except, perhaps, literary fiction.  Which, to me, is the best kind. As an example, the current story "Brooke and Tara/Scenic Overlook" tells the potentially explosive story of a movie star’s love affair with an underage 16-year old girl/woman. But the affair unfolds naturally, almost matter-of-factly, and you find yourself rooting for the lovers. Meanwhile, there is broad humor as the movie star is in training to be the next James Bond, and is dabbling in a summer stock theater production directed by an alcoholic Noel Coward wannabe. The author, Kathleen Maher, writes extended serial pieces, and one of her completed stories, about novella length, is available in the sidebar. Titled "Black Mountain," it is the story of a young mystic who comes to a small North Carolina town and changes the lives of everyone in it. Again: unclassifiable but fascinating. And if you’re not in the mood for serials, or don’t have time, the author posts links to lovely flash fiction pieces in the sidebar. Each one under 500 words, they are like a chocolate sampler: different flavors, all worth trying.
