Dreaming and Driving by Maureen Andrade

Gen X Coming-of-Age Novel

Dreaming and Driving is a fictional novel set in Portland, Oregon in 1995.  Against the backdrop of an indie rock scene and college culture, the three main characters Bruce, Derek, and Jake are in a waking dream.  In addition to partying nightly at their apartment, the three young men grapple with life’s largest questions.  How do you grow up?  What does it mean to be a man?  How can I hurt the ones I love so much?  And finally, the ultimate question, what do I do next?

Veering their lives off the straight and narrow, the three main characters make mistakes, break hearts, and finally find their own paths.  Dreaming and Driving gives voice to a new kind of coming-of-age story, one that can only happen in a generation marked by technical advancement and the dissolution of traditional gender roles.  At times a wild ride, this novel challenges the old notions of what it means to grow up.
