Ember is a very interesting and worthwhile read. Ms. Sharpe’s intimate scenes are not burdened with awkward language and clichéd phrases. The imagery in this story is rich and powerful, and she knows how to write fantastic descriptions of events. I found the first-person narrative engaging, and my sympathy for the main character was not compromised due to any of her behavior. I like the antiheroic elements of her personality.
My one problem with the narrative was the predictability of the plot. I really enjoy stories that snatch the rug out from under me, as it were. Ember did not satisfy this need. However, I do recommend a look.
