ERICK'S JOURNEY

Take the Mystery Tour

I missed out on the blurb before clicking through to read Erick’s Journey and so I set off on my own adventure through Zoe E. Whitten’s story with no idea what to expect.  By the end of part one, I thought I knew exactly what was going to happen, and then I was pleasantly surprised with the unexpected twists and turns the plot took.

There is a lot to like about this dark fantasy story and I think that for me, one of the main attractions was that 99% of the world of Lissand was familiar. There are Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Sidhe etc. We have all been introduced to them before, we know wherever they are there will be magic, swords, tree houses and inns.

Then there is that extra 1%, that little undefined something which shakes the imagination and takes the reader into new territory. It’s here, tantalising glimpses reveal themselves throughout and they were frequent enough to leave me with the feeling that Erick’s Journey is only just a little way across the surface and could go deeper, much deeper.

At times the story made me smile, other times I laughed out loud and there was one defining moment when my blood chilled and the story took a much darker twist than I had expected.

I warmed to the characters, there were several I wanted to learn more about and I was a little disappointed when that did not happen.

I would like to have seen more action rather than telling in places.  Having said that, I have to admit that one of the highlights of this story is the amount of detail the author imparts about the world, its races and their society.

Erick’s Journey is well worth the ride. If you decide to take it, I recommend that you skip the blurb which I think gives away a little more than it should.
