Fire in the Void by Elaine Corvidae

Fire in the Void screen capture

Sequel to Exile’s Burn.  The Zatvian Cooperative is in a state of collapse, and warfare, rebellion, and lawlessness are everywhere.  Follow the crew of the pirate ship Exile as they search through the ruins, encountering petty tyrants, smugglers, and medical experiments gone wrong.  Led by their amnesiac telepathic captain, Rat, they are searching for the daughter of one of their own, kidnapped as a child by the Zatvians and remade as a killing machine.

But the only thing more dangerous than searching for her . . . might be finding her.

A serialized novel, updating fortnightly

Note: Fire in the Void contains some graphic violence and harsh language.

Blazing!

Fire in the Void takes off where Exile’s Burn ended.  The Zatvian Empire is no longer, chaos reigns and the remaining crew of the Exile waste no time in preparing for their next adventure.

There are fifteen action packed chapters at the time of this review and the story easily stands alone with no need for the reader to be familiar with the first book in order to thoroughly enjoy this one.  The story is far more than a sequel to Exile’s Burn though – Fire in the Void reaches a far greater level right from the first chapter.

New characters are introduced immediately and the story benefits greatly from this influx of new blood.  Rat, Neva and other original characters are far more evolved – the Zatvians and their medical experiments appear far more sinister.  The storylines are rich and exciting, the pace exhilarating and the stakes just as high.

Fire in the Void is updated fortnightly and an active forum is in place giving fans the opportunity to discuss chapters as they are posted.  Each chapter is accompanied by some great artwork and the ‘live’ site adds to and enhances the web fiction experience.

Awesome story!

I started this story without reading "Exile’s Burn," and am glad to report that this story stands perfectly well on its own. The writing is excellent and the conflicts and characterizations are engaging.

The downside? I did notice that there seems to be some similarity between this story and that of the lost TV show "Firefly." Crumbling space empires, space pirates trying to survive, terraformed planets and space stations, genetically engineered girls made into fighting machines. It’s all very similar . . . eerily so.

Luckily the characters and storylines are engaging enough that the similarites don’t bother me so much. Am eagerly awaiting the next installments!
