I started this story without reading "Exile’s Burn," and am glad to report that this story stands perfectly well on its own. The writing is excellent and the conflicts and characterizations are engaging.

The downside? I did notice that there seems to be some similarity between this story and that of the lost TV show "Firefly." Crumbling space empires, space pirates trying to survive, terraformed planets and space stations, genetically engineered girls made into fighting machines. It’s all very similar . . . eerily so.

Luckily the characters and storylines are engaging enough that the similarites don’t bother me so much. Am eagerly awaiting the next installments!
