Golden Vampires by Go! Media Entertainment

Golden Vampires screen capture

An Urban Fantasy aimed at teenage girls, Golden Vampires is a modern day re-telling of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”—with a vampiric twist.

Told in a real-time “Blogfic” format by Juliet and Sanny, two teenage girls who share the same blog, the story begins with an innocent crush on the hot lead singer of a local band, but takes a darker turn when the two girls are suddenly plunged into passion, tragedy, and the decadent underworld of the infamous “Golden Vampires.”

Golden Vampires is a blog fic, which is like fictional characters writing their story in their own journal (kind of like Dracula by Bram Stoker).  However, unlike the above story, Golden Vampires is not written well.  The characters are flimsy at best and have the same voice.  The author gives us visual cues so that we know which protagonist is speaking, but I don’t think that one girl using correct grammar and the other not leads to three dimensional characters.  It only serves to make approximately half of the posts bothersome to read.

The impetus to provide the drive for the thematic elements is severely lacking and I’m left wondering why I should care for these characters.

In the end, this doesn’t promise to deliver anything new and it does the old badly.

Golden Vampires is quick, fun, and right up a teenage girl’s alley.

Even with only nine very short posts, I’m hooked. This is easy to catch up with and fun, in my opinion. While I do agree with the editorial review that the two girl’s voices are quite similar, I think this is typical amongst girls in this age group. Teenage girls tend to talk and write similarly to each other.

The coolest thing about this is the interconnectedness of the characters, who not only have their own blog, but their own twitter account, where you can follow them. There’s a whole community ready for readers. And I think that teenagers would L-O-V-E this.
