KINDA SUPER GAY

Funny and unique

By Nina Santucci, author of Fooled

Jan 6, 2015: I’ve only read the first few chapters of Kinda Super Gay so far, but I have to say that I was hooked right away. Because my general reading preferences tend toward old-fashioned literature, this is I think one of the first stories I’ve read that has a gay protagonist, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. The author does a fantastic job of making Sarah more than just a character or a symbol, instead she behaves realistically, like a real girl who happens to be lesbian. (And I have to agree with other reviewers that the way Sarah finds out she is a lesbian is a hilarious send-up of male culture and the "erotic lesbian".)

In fact, I think the author does a good job of weaving Sarah’s journey of self-discovery with the larger plot overall, which makes this story interesting to a wider audience in the process. The dialogue and characterization is believable, and the superhero world is solidly developed and as realistic as any superhero world can be. I personally felt the story had a tone similar to the movie Juno, though I don’t know if that was intended.

My main problem with the story is that I wasn’t crazy how the author just throws you into the story at the beginning. Throughout the first 2-3 chapters I felt like we needed a bit more description or exposition so the readers can get their bearings, get their understanding of the world before proceeding straight into the action. It doesn’t have to be an infodump, but some info would certainly help. I also thought the focus on Hellfire in the opening was a bit strange considering the story isn’t really about Hellfire. I suspect the author did this to make Sarah seem more "straight" in her focus on her team member’s looks, and to make her lesbianism more of a shock, but it just didn’t seem to fit.

I will probably continue to read this story, especially since it has already finished (gotta love a web serial that actually finished)! So far it’s been the most interesting, unique, and fun story I’ve read on the site, and I would definitely recommend it.
