This is only the second piece of script presented fiction that I have read and I admit to knowing very little – if anything at all – about the technicalities of their execution outside my experience as a reader.
What appeals to me about this style of fiction is that it can be very fast moving, that is certainly the case with Knightfall.
At the moment there is only one episode posted which is both enjoyable and attention grabbing. There is a lot of intrigue and I have formed an opinion as to what I think is happening and about to happen yet I am still unsure. I am enjoying the prospect that the author is capable of surprising me with the direction the story may take.
Ben Essex is good at visually setting the scene and as well as describing the locations, characters and their actions he also includes some of their thoughts together with a little bit of his own often humorous commentary. I like that even though it strikes me as more book than script at times.
There were a couple of instances when the dialogue niggled. One example was a police interview where I felt that if the interview was being taped – and it was my assumption that it would have been – a couple of the questions would have been phrased more carefully. In other parts the dialogue flowed really well and sucked me right into the conversation.
It is obvious that a great deal of thought and effort has gone into the site design. Extra material is available including a link to one of the imaginary organisations mentioned – at least I hope it is imaginary!
The story is available in both HTML and PDF versions and as the writer himself states the PDF version is “recommended due to superior prettiness.”
I am interested to see how this story is going to develop and I will continue to follow it. At this early stage I am awarding 3.5 stars and it is my intention to revisit this review at a later date when more of the story has been posted.
