Rema by Amy Kim Kibuishi

"The City of Water is an old place full of dark secrets. I brought you here to find that darkness, and illuminate it."

Rema: a distant world of magic and beauty where the gods are slowly dying. The City of Water is held hostage as greed becomes the standard and a race of elemental demigods are suppressed for their powers.

It would seem all is lost if not for the chance estrangement of a singular Earthling girl. Her search for answers surrounding her father’s death leads her to a painful truth, to gods, magic, war, and to an enigmatic blue-haired boy who is at the center of it all.

Note: Rema contains some graphic violence.

Editor’s First Impression

By Fiona Gregory, editor

Early Look: Rema

By Wildbow, author of Ward

Dec 7, 2012: I can appreciate an author who not only submits their work to the site but actively participates in the community even as they wait for their work to pop up on the sidebar and start getting ratings or reviews. Too often we’ll see people submit & disappear. Author Amy Kim Kibuishi’s participation on the forums coupled with her bubbly, positive personality were nudge enough for me to go ahead and post a review. Jan 20, 2013: The Good: Great pacing, evocative descriptions, well-drawn primary characters

The Bad: Some minor detail quibbles (secondary characters, minor plot points, clothing descriptions, I’m being nit-picky)

The Lowdown: Rema recently appeared on the front page new listings, and, heck, I’m always up for a good fantasy story, especially one with a younger protagonist. I was rather wary of how Kibuishi would end up handling the "drawn into another world" trope—but honestly, after the [more . . .]
