Riders of Darith is, at the point of writing this, 28 chapters long. The main character,Tal, is a mysterious, moody guy with some classic teen attitude thrown in for good measure. He’s on a search for ‘the gods’? His journey – rather purposeless wandering and taking mercenary-warrior-band type jobs, from what I can gather – is interupted by call back home.
The characters in this seem quite true to life. I’m sure that most readers will know a spoiled brat like Rogen, a solid dependable loyal guy like Brus, distant-but-friendly men like Jed and Dalon. Being female myself, maybe it’s no surprise that I’m enjoying the female characters most. The somewhat wishy-washy but promise-showing Rebecca, refusing to take the path laid out for her – and the princess. I don’t know if she’ll be coming back into the story, but I greatly enjoyed the surprise of her true nature. Even the queen seems an interesting mix of strength and weakness.
The writing technique did occasionally trip me up as I read. It’s a little jerky at times, tempting me to skim-read bits which turn out to be important. However, for the most part this story is very well-written and imaginative – I very much like it. I’ve subscribed to the feed to ensure that I don’t miss a single episode.
