Not a thriller, but worth a peep.

I’m not sure what percentage of the final story the 7 chapters I read will be, but so far there’s huge, growing pile of questions and very little in the way of answers.  The protagonist is 15 year-old Cassie, and her entire life is apparently one big cipher.  The story is set in the modern day, among the redwoods of California which are apparently under the protection of an extralegal army.  Cassie has just arrived in the area and her exploration of the local parks leads to her getting entangled with the mysterious army members, including several people who were somehow involved in Cassie’s past.

They story is well-written with interesting characters (when everyone isn’t being all mysterious and opaque) and its obviously very tightly plotted.  If you like conspiracy tales, you might enjoy this one.  Also, even though it has a contemporary setting, I suspect there will be a fantasy element to some of future answers, if you happen to enjoy that sort of blended genre.

There isn’t anything bad about this story, but I still found myself a bit bored by it.  I’m not a big fan of mysteries, so without something else like a lot of humor or unique world-building to hold my attention, I probably won’t be returning to this story.  It doesn’t help that the protagonist is (understandably from her POV!) very confused by everything, so as a reader looking over her shoulder, I spent most of my time feeling confused, too.  Other readers might enjoy this more than me, but I can’t recommend it.
