SROAD is unique in that the writer makes a conscious effort to painstakingly create an entirely separate universe with just enough in common with the real world to keep it from being overwhelming. The scale and scope of the story can only be described as epic, and the characters are numerous and believable. Each character is very different from the last, and you can’t help but develop a few favorites along the way. Even the ones you hate at first grow on you whether you want them to or not, and end up being a welcome addition to the roster.
The single best thing about this story is that it creates an entire universe from scratch, and does a good job of it. The world is immersive and deep, leading you to new places and familiar locales intermittently. In addition to the astounding depth of the world, the plot that drives said world is equally massive and appealing. There are a great deal of twists and turns to the story, enough to keep anyone entertained and guessing. I have never encountered a more stimulating, thought-provoking story than this.
The only negative point of this story is that at times when new characters are introduced, they’re introduced by the fistful and it takes you a few chapters to get straight in your head who is who, and by that time a few of the new characters might have already died or outlived their purpose in the story. Outside of that, this story has very little in the way of lulls in the action, points that caused me to lose interest, or sections that seemed to run on too long. It is clear that the author has an all-encompassing plan for everything that is going on, and no single detail is put in without appropriate forethought.
If you’re looking for a story that takes place on a massive scale in a magnificent world, with a plot driven by a colorful cast of believable characters, I cannot recommend SROAD enough. If you’re looking for an action story where characters pit themselves against each other with equal parts strength and intelligence, SROAD is for you. Finally, if you’re looking for a story of a boy who becomes a man after travelling through dimensions and saving the girl from the evil villain with the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, SROAD is for you.
