An ongoing series, with new episodes thrice weekly.
Wherever danger lurks, whenever terror strikes, there are heroes ever vigilant ready to fight the good fight, defending truth and justice. They live among us anonymously and ask not for recognition or praise, but rather that others would live by their brave example.
One such heroine was Kaira Cade who, along with her brother Justin, helped protect humankind as the team of Glimmer Girl and Flashbolt. Though when tragedy occurs Kaira finds her life changed forever, and while the world thinks her life lost she is forced instead to live her brothers in his place.
Part superhero adventure, part human drama, Shimmer follows Kaira Cade’s personal journey as she picks up the pieces left from her former life, divines an uncertain future and reclaims her own identity, all while saving the world at the same time.

A book called "Soon I Will be Invincible" helped give superhero fiction a shot in the arm - it started a new genre of superhero books. Original superhero stories, not novelisations of the already famous heroes who have sunk into the public consciousness.
Stories that involve the super, the not-so-super, those struggling with their powers or embracing it, those "blessed with suck" or just given a power that is easy to keep under wraps.
Shimmer is a story that takes the old trope of a body swap and takes it to an entirely new level. This is no Disney movie involving a few days trapped in a body, then a lesson learned and laughs to be had. This is a serious story - not one to be taken lightly.
There are plenty of laughs though - the character of the Peacemonger for example, a member of the local super-team that once tried to arrest a dog for skipping school, or subtle humour of Doctor Smoke, at once another member of the super-team but also something more.
Shimmer deals with a multitude of themes, not least of all being trapped in a body that doesn’t belong to you - of needing to show what’s on the inside, not the outside, not the immediately apparent.
It’s a subtle blend of Invincible (the comic, not the aforementioned book) and Astro City. It’s a story told in four colours, and you should be reading it.

Shimmer rocks my socks. It has an action-packed plot, interesting characters, and a wealth of superhero lore to support its storylines. Reading through, it’s almost as though I’m viewing one of my favorite comic books — it reads beautifully.
Shimmer also handles some difficult issues, including identity, secrets, family, and gender construction. They’re not just thrown around for the shock factor, but are actually examined in a well-integrated fashion.
The only thing I wasn’t keen on, when reading Shimmer, was that it has a tendency to skip around in the timeline. The skips aren’t always well-integrated, and left me going, "huh" a lot of the time. However, the skips are always explained, and everything levels out eventually.
Shimmer is a must-read for superhero fiction fans. ^^
