There are ratings, and then there are ratings. I give Shimmer 3.5 stars for the comic genre, 2.5 stars on the overall literary scale. I like that the main character has a fundamental identity issue to grapple with, and that GG’s youth and limited perspective are factored in.
On my personal comic genre scale, Watchmen and V for Vendetta get 5 stars, lesser works by Neil Gaiman get 4 stars, and 3 stars is readable, if single faceted.
I’d like the story better if the main character’s nervousness and reactions were given more depth / grit, and if the story had a much higher proportion of evocation, rather than being narrated to us from the character’s perspective. I have some experience as an editor, and don’t give high ratings lightly. I didn’t down rate it for the small number of composition errors.
Also note, new chapters are posted more like weekly than thrice.
