Specimens by Resheet Schultz

No hero survives contact with the villains.

Twenty-six years ago, people with abilities that defied the laws of physics began to appear. They were few in numbers and gained the name “spec” after the government began hunting them down and conducting secret experiments. Chaos brewed as the spec population grew in number, with many of them turning to crime as a way to survive on the run.

Five years after the initial appearances, the three most powerful specs banded together and declared themselves the Triumvirate. The Triumvirate declared spec experimentation illegal and enforced their decree with absolute force. The government fought back and was annexed, with the surviving fragments serving under the Triumvirate.

With their power established, the Triumvirate turned to the growing villain uprising. The Triumvirate recruited aspiring superheroes from the ranks of vigilantes and named the Wardens. The Wardens were given the power to execute villains on the streets, but after public resistance, they changed to incarceration instead of execution.

The Wardens prevent total chaos, but the harder they squeeze, the worse the villains become. Superpowered terrorist groups roam from city to city, spreading chaos and devastation wherever the go. Even on a local scale, Roxton Bay seethes with illicit activity. An uneasy truce exists between the three major gangs, but how long can that last? And what lengths will the Wardens go to when the pot boils over?

Lisa Bennett is a second-generation 18-year-old spec. She’s idolized the Triumvirate and the Wardens ever since she was a young girl. Now she has her chance: six months ago, she experienced connection, gaining the ability to telepathically control plants. She’s always wanted to be a superhero, but she’s put off taking the leap, rationalizing the delay as planning and preparation. But now that’s about to change—along with her idealized view of right and wrong.

Note: Specimens contains some graphic violence and harsh language.
