SPY LIKE ME

Eh

Editor: Sonja Nitschke

I had high hopes when I looked at the front page of Spy Like Me.  The layout was clean, with a page of all the characters, complete with pictures of pretty celebrities.  That’s always fun.  I did miss navigation links to go onwards to the next episode, but that’s easily fixed.

But the story itself?

I had a hard time reading through the first five episodes, which is where I stopped.  There’s a lot of dialog and not a lot of anything else.  I don’t really have a feel for the characters—they feel very two dimensional to me.

The author tells the reader their emotions—the reader doesn’t feel them.

Too much telling, not enough showing.

The writing is ok, it could use some work.  The author seems overly fond of using the word "quipped" and it appears multiple times per chapter.  Readers are smart—they don’t need to be told every single time a character makes a "witty" remark.  The writing itself could also be tightened.

After five episodes, I’m not really sure where the plot is going.  Silly romance seems to make up a large part of it though and that makes me twitch.  Even though the main characters are in their early twenties, they seem to have the maturity of teenagers in love and other matters.

In short, good idea, bad execution.
