STRONG HEART

Solid Narrative, Classic Sword and Sorcery

Member: Robert Rodgers

Strong Heart is a sword-and-sorcery story that details the exploits of Joana, a desert mercenary and "Dagha pavadkar" – or ‘pure warrior’ – who is hired to look after a merchant’s family while he is away. The job is complicated by the cousin of the merchant’s wife, Tobias, a soft-hearted magician who may have managed to accidentally piss off half the town.

The story is a slow build—over ten installments so far and little more than a grab-and-shake by way of action—but the world is lively and the characters are distinct. Joana reminds me of Jordan’s Conan—shrewd and capable, possessing as much cunning as battle prowess. She moves through the narrative with a fierce, no-nonsense attitude toward everything; she has goals and she does what is necessary to meet them.

The only thing that holds this story back is proper editing; Joana grins in nearly every paragraph (to the point where it gets very annoying), there are a dozen or so replacements for the word ‘said’, etcetera—none of it is enough to render the narrative impenetrable, but it’s distracting enough to shave off half a star.

Otherwise, this is as straightforward as sword-and-sorcery gets—watching a competent character move through an interesting world, employing violence and cunning to arrive at their various ends. In this sense, the story succeeds very well, and anyone who enjoys classic sword-and-sorcery is likely to get quite a lot out of the tale. Solid meat-and-potatoes stuff, with the only significant flaw being a lack of adequate proofreading.

STRONG HEART

Worth Reading

As the blurb says Strong Heart by capriox bovidae is very much in the sword and sorcery genre.  At eleven installments it’s still early days but it’s shaping up to be a well written and engaging story so far.

There’s obviously been some careful worldbuilding. The magic system is well thought out and the details of the setting are positively palpable, and the two main characters, Joana and Tobias, come to life and leap off the page. Even better it manages all this without excessive infodumping.

Perhaps the only problem with the story is the plot is a little slow moving. It feels like things are about to start moving, but even sand info-dumping much of what is up so far feels like setup.

One other big problem is that it’s currently hosted on Livejournal which is not the idea platform for web fiction. This makes navigation less than ideal. Fortunately there is a post which acts as an index and every chapter has a link to the previous and next chapters. According to the landing page Capriox is looking to move to a better site soon, but for now it’s something to be aware of.

Verdict: Fans of the sword and sorcery sub-genre of traditional fantasy would do well to give Strong Heart a chance. It’s really shaping up to be a good one.

STRONG HEART

About to kick off

Fantasy is not my favourite genre. Which is why I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying "Strong Heart" immensely. The characterization is excellent, the environments colourful and well realized, and there is not a fantasy cliché in sight. Things are perhaps a little too slow moving as Jo goes back and forth meeting various characters and setting up the plot, but there was enough excitement promised to keep me reading.
