Subjugation by James Galloway (Fel)

Subjugation is a story that centers around Jason Fox and Jyslin Shaddale.  The Faey, an alien telepathic race, has taken control of Earth and are using it as a farming colony to supply food for their empire.  Jason is a college student who is learning faey technology, but is upset with the faey and their treatment of Earth.  Along the way, Jason meets a fiery red head name Jyslin, who takes a fancy to him and will not take no for an answer.  There is a problem though.  Jyslin is a Faey Imperial Marine.  And, marines are not easily deterred . . .

Note: Subjugation contains some harsh language.

Editor’s First Impression

By Linda Schoales, editor

Feb 18, 2010: The Prologue is a bit dry because it tells the history that sets up the story in an almost textbook-way. The first chapter looks promising as it moves to the point of view of a student living two years after the Faey have taken over.

Feb 8, 2014: Well, it’s certainly not a short story, and it’s apparently just the first book. That length is what makes it difficult to review as well. I discovered it thanks to a recent review and found myself liking the premise, as one I’d thought of before as something that would be interesting.

Just be warned: this is not a good story.

So, yes, Earth is captured and subject to hot space elf rule. [more . . .]

Feb 21, 2010: I have mixed feelings about this story. On one hand, I have a laundry list of dislikes about it. On the other hand, I did read through the whole novel (although I was skimming some toward the end) and I don’t regret doing so. The result is going to be a long review. The short version: 3.5 stars, don’t be afraid to read it, but certainly not a favorite of mine.

As the description says, this story is about Jason Fox, [more . . .]

Feb 16, 2014: I have to be honest, I have not managed to get that far with it yet, but that is the problem. It is an effort to read, both in the sense of the layout of the blog and the actual writing style.

I found it hard to care about the main character Jason, he did not come across well, the narration being in the third person does not help you feel involved or emotionally tied to the character. Plus Jason seems [more . . .]
