TALES OF MU

Not a fan

Alas, Tales of MU. It had such a great concept. The story started out very well, and the writing was superb. I charged through several hundred odd chapters in a few days.

Tales of MU is about Mackenzie Blaise, fresher undergraduate student and half demon, who attends a university for beings with magical powers. It tracks her various misadventures, romantic and otherwise, during her time studying at Magesterius University.

However, as the chapters go on, the story seems to lose its way. One of the biggest gripes I have is the pacing. Drama is usually a big draw in college-set stories, but we’re expected to believe that all of this has happened to Mack in the space of a few weeks. It’s not even Winter Break yet, and she’s gone through more drama than most of my year set did in 4-6 years.

The characters can also be rather grating. There are a few characters who are being pushed at us, and we’re expected to root for them, but they’re annoying, sometimes unpleasant. The issues touched upon, such as the sexuality continuum, start out as fascinating and well-thought out, but it quickly becomes clunky and dismissive.

No disrespect at all is intended towards the author AE, but I’m not going to be reading on. I think if the pacing and characterisation were tightened up, I would reconsider though.
