The End of Things

An abandoned novel.

“So we steeled ourselves.  Wrapped up warm against the shock to come and left our shelter again.  Every house on the main street we stopped at.  Every one the same.  Curtains open, doors closed, no sound, no life.  We didn’t speak, the silence ruled and it wasn’t ours to break.”

My name is Rosey Haze, and this is my story.

Editorial Reviews

The End of Things is a diary of a woman who is quarantined with her husband and the whole village in their homes, for 10 days, due to some kind of emergency.  There have been over 30 installments posted in the last month, and I’ll tell you that the 10 days is past and the story is not over, but I’m not going to tell you any more about what happens.  I advise you don’t peek ahead.  You’ll be robbing yourself of the fun.

The writing is great—crisp and believable.  The voice is strong, and never slips.  The installments are mostly quite short, and it makes for a very easy read.  The plot develops only occassionally, but I love all the little details that fill the gaps.  Overall, the story had me spooked, at times, and I felt compelled to turn the page after each part.

I’m taking an RSS feed on this one, and am definitely looking forward to more.  I wholeheartedly recommend The End of Things.

I tried to read this story earlier before the editorial and member reviews. It was hard to get into since it was more like a odd mix of badly written metafiction. So I gave up at the beginning. Perhaps it was meant to be that way.

However when the other reviews popped up said that there was more to it, I thought I give it another try.

I skimmed the beginning just to get an idea of the story itself, but frankly you could probably skip the beginning and just cut to the action.  I enjoyed the the rest of the writing, but to the beginning is awkward because it doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the story. I can understand what the author is trying to do, but it takes away what the true nature of the story is.

It does get better, but I hate to be the one that says skip the beginning . . . so I’m going to say skim over the beginning to get an idea of what the premise of the story is. Stick with it and it definitely gets better.

I’m curious to know where this will lead.

I admit it, I’m hooked.

The beginning was not promising. The writing was a bit hackneyed and immature. But as the story developed and matured, so too did the writing. The pacing is quite good, and the lack of dialogue didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. In fact, the way the story is told contributes mightily to the overall sense of tension and anxiety.

I’m intrigued by the sidebar information, and hope that all of this information turns out to be useful and germane as the story unfolds.

I am cautiously optimistic about this piece. All told, it isn’t yet very long, and it’s possible that the story will fall apart or the author will abandon it. I hope that doesn’t happen. I look forward to more entries.
