There aren’t many stories that cause you to pause in the middle of the first chapter and pull a Neo; “Woah” is probably a word you’ll be saying out loud throughout The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect.
Granted, the title is a mouthful and readers may be a bit subdued by the heavy content. Yes, the sex is graphic. Yes, the violence will make you squeamish. But the way it is woven together accents to the story. It shocks you. The world of Prime Intellect is horrifying, though it seems pleasurable, and it is highlighted by the author’s style.
Of course, the story isn’t perfect, no matter how much I rave about it. But you know what? It’s pretty darn close by my opinion. The author, Roger Williams, really put together a believable world. The main character, Caroline, is spit-proof. You can’t tread on her, and her actions are both believable and admirable even when they are extreme (though you may have some reservations about her hobbies). The line “If I was alone, and if I was handcuffed, and if there were six or seven guys chasing me with night-vision scopes and rifles, then I might be a little worried. But really only if they had a helicopter too.” Both describes her character and the story. Of course, she’s not about to let a helicopter stop her either.
Her later actions in chapter eight may astound you the most, but the resolution may just have you pondering inside your head at night before you go to bed.
If there had been a little less violence and sex, this kind of story could make headway in a school literature book, but I would certainly feel as if the gritty nature of the world was lost. So please, if you are looking for an intelligent read that‘ll make you think, go read The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect. Of course, you’ll probably feel a little emotionally bothered by some of the aforementioned graphic content. It really is intense.
