THE PEACOCK KING

Two thumbs up, definitely

It is surprising how quickly one can get hooked on this epic piece of literature. The writing is stylized and flowing, compelling and exciting. Unlike many web fictions, which are rushed choppy and confusing, The Peacock King Trilogy has the set, meandering pace of a leisurely walk in the park. The plot unfolds constantly, however with out for-shadowing later points, and for every one thing that becomes clear, several questions arise to ponder on.

Although Lyric or Lotus, as he is known for most of the first book, is clearly the center piece and main character, with most of the narrative from his perspective, the story revolves around the enigmatic character, The Peacock King, or Ebrellin-i.

The plot starts by jumping off a cliff into the illegal sale of a slave, of a race of beings with power similar to that of gods. Lyric, a runaway from a rival country of the Peacock King’s Audive Rocale, has appeared to wind his way into the King’s inner court for his own gain. A Poet from said rival company is there acting as a spy, and scholar. But when a sudden turn of events that changes the situation, as the Poet is captured, Lyric finds himself drafted as a spy.

I would recommend reading through the wiki after the first time reading through the story, and you’ll have no trouble reading through the story again, just to savor it once more. The wiki and the story really go hand in hand, as the wiki doesn’t make sense without the story, and there are certain things in the Storyworld that are only mentioned in the wiki. Although one could easily read the story with out it. However, in the wiki there are also, pictures, maps, family tree’s and brief explanations of Kingdoms and cultures and languages.

Nothing in the story in outright said, or explained, and most of it is left up to the reader to connect the dots. The authors have put up forum pages on the site where one can discuss the story, ask questions, beg for spoilers, etc.

The story is updated twice a week, so no waiting months to hope for a new chapter. If you have finished every chapter thus far, and have become addicted (as many do), there are a few short stories a mini-series, and snipits of stories to read. these can also be used to get a better understanding of the culture that presides in Storyworld.

You will like it, if you like romance, action, history, psychology, ethics, mythology, or fantasy, singularly or all at once. I highly recommend The Peacock King. I am enchanted with all the characters, even the one’s I think should die because they are EVIL! But I love them all, all the same.
