THE SAMHAIN GATE

Your favorite action movie as a book

Well the premise is correct, unfortunately there are a few common weaknesses of chosen one stories. The story progresses similar to the typical action/fantasy movie, meaning some details are obviously guessed by the writer or taken from movies (Hollywood physics basically). The pacing of the plot is definitely exaggerated and a few quirks of the heroine are slightly too often mentioned. Most movies of this genre are worse though, a lot of books too..

So this is a quite interesting story with a lot of action, but its a bit rough around the edges. Its lot of fun to read, but don’t try to think too hard about the details. Oh and of course the main hero is like pretty much every "chosen one" a Mary Sue.

This may sound like a bad story, but this is pretty much the ONLY complaints I have. It is an interesting story without a very complex setting and ideal if you want to avoid too deep involvement or only follow up sporadically.

The sequel "Valkyrion" started this week. It starts a bit predictable in upgrading the heroes of Samhain Gate to "real heroes". But this time the story increases in complexity – there are several plot lines and the heroes gained a bit of depth, while the whole story flows is better. Of course it is still movie like in physics and pacing.
