Editor’s First Impression

By Chris Poirier, editor

Mar 10, 2012: When I first wrote this note, earlier this evening, I gave Gone Lawn 4.5 stars. However, as I’ve read more of the magazine, I’ve found that opinion changing. There is no doubt at all that the writing here is of high quality—the language is confident, articulate, and well-constructed. Every one of the featured authors can write. But, unfortunately, I’ve caught myself trying to excuse something I really shouldn’t: the stories ultimately ring hollow. There’s no depth to them, no real connection . . . no real point; they are more experiments in writing than stories. At this point, I’m dropping my rating to 3.5, because technical competence in language just isn’t enough. There are better things here to read.
