Sam’s Sense of Snow

By Fiona Gregory, editor

Jul 8, 2011: This is brilliant! An original and well-written serial novel about what happens when a boy finds that he has the ability to communicate with an alien entity living in the snow. The snow-loving beings are bit miffed with humans right now, it turns out: they like it cold, and we’re making it hotter. The snow creatures are not without resources, but humans won’t like their solution.

This is in the British tradition of stories about resourceful children having mad adventures and outsmarting short-sighted adults, but up to date with Skype and smartphones. It starts out a little slow – although interesting – but bear with it, things get catastrophic very quickly.

Geared toward the tween age group (the main characters are twelve) but anyone who likes original science fantasy should enjoy this.
