LEGEND OF HERO

Fairly solid for RPG fans, but can still use polish

(Disclosure: I’m also a friend of the author, and proofread first drafts of this serial)

I’m going to build on thaumaturgy’s review, in particular, to add some details that seem to be missing. It’s a good review (currently given above).

First, this novel is actually set in the TTU universe. While the work stands on its own, and bends over backwards to explain elements that may not be familiar to readers, reading some of Baxil’s previous work is advised to completely appreciate the story.

In particular, the TTU elements of "The Changes", and backstories of characters like Dennis Redwing are better explained by those works. Several other cultural references are also better appreciated by those "in the know"—non-RPG gamers will be almost deliberately left out in the cold.

Also, this is not Baxil’s first attempt at a serial novel, counter to the previous review. Motivated primarily by various NaNoWriMo runs, the first web serial I’m aware of was actually http://johnstanton.livejournal.com/, which deals with very similar motifs through the eyes of a single character.

Overall, I like how the work is coming together, and appreciate it for how far Bax has come as a writer. As a peer, I feel he still has a long way to go; but what’s there is already fairly solid.
