The writing in the first chapter is solid and the premise sounds like fun.  Magic and magic users in an Old West-style town.  Complete with a sheriff, a bordello and a pretty little schoolmarm.

Ain’t jist gold in them thar hills

All of the classic western motifs are in this.  The small town built on a mining operation, the Sherrif who is watchful of everyone, the rich industrialist that owns almost everything in town, the miners with their small claims.  Right down to the new school marm.  The big difference comes in the little things.

Scryer’s Gulch is not the reason I love MeiLin Miranda, but it certainly doesn’t hurt!  While her other story, An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom, is much more my particular cup of tea, Scryer’s Gulch is a romping good time.  Set in an alternate Wild West, the heavy touch of magic and the mysterious keep the story from seeming [more . . .]

I enjoy this new story by MeiLin just as much as I enjoy her other work, "The Intimate History".  All the best elements carry over: the fully realized emotions, motivations, and personalities of the characters; the practiced writing/editing skills; the world-building; the engaging plots & drama; the whiff romance; and of course the hint of sex (actually no explicit sex [more . . .]
