“Lost Days” is a very good horror/fantasy set in New Orleans, among the vampires and ghosts. There’s a large cast of distinct characters —some mortal, many not— and several intertwining plot lines. Among the non-mortals, there’s politics, alliances and troublemakers. For the mortals, there’s parties and the Party Girl Killer. For both, there are signs that a war may be coming as a pair of twinned souls re-appear.
The characters are all well-written and varied. The perspective shifts from time to time, giving insight into the major characters and their motivations. Mathias is concerned about finding the twinned souls and consults a seer. Dori is a charming child vampire who likes to collect junk, but often loses track of time, a danger when the sunrise can kill. Lucas and El run a club where vampires interact with thrill-seeking mortals. Eve is a mortal who can see ghosts but is happier with books. Her friend takes her to the club where her story begins to mix with that of the non-mortals.
The story is well-written with a nice mixture of action, dialog, description and magic. It reminds me a bit of Anne Rice’s work, although not quite as rich or erotic. There’s a bit of the Dresden Files there as well, although so far no clumsy wizards carrying hockey sticks. There’s a lot going on but the various plots are compelling, drawing the reader on as the narrator switches back and forth.
The formatting problem mentioned by an earlier reviewer has been fixed, with a row of stars separating the changes in narrative. I had no problem following the jumps.
So far, “Lost Days” is a well-written supernatural novel with an interesting cast. Unfortunately, the series is currently in hiatus, but hopefully the author will return to it soon. What’s there so far is definitely worth trying if you like complex horror/fantasy thrillers, or vampire novels set in New Orleans.
