THE SAMHAIN GATE

Excellent start!

This is a highly enjoyable read.  It just flies by because it’s so much fun and there’s so much potential for what might pop up next (I do hope we get to see Sleipnir and Loki—can’t wait to get Iris’s take on them!).  I look forward to seeing more installments posted.

The overall site design is clean and engaging.  My only criticism on that front is that the text column is rather wide; readability would be enhanced by taking it down to about two-thirds of its current width.  The story would benefit from another editing pass; there were a few typo’s etc.

I enjoy Iris’s wit and her musings about her predicament.  I’d like to have seen a little more development of her character in these early installments.  Right now, I like her pretty well, but I don’t feel any real emotional attachment that would make me care about the things that are happening to her.  I pondered to figure out why this was and then I realized that Iris, herself, doesn’t really have an emotional investment in what’s going on.  Her reactions are almost entirely either mental (mostly glib) or physical (description of action without much description of how these things actually feel to her), and they give little insight into her emotional state.

I think a few little character truths added here and there, early on, would make a huge difference, without jeopardizing the fun feel of the current story.

Right now, the main draw for the reader—and it’s admittedly a strong one—is to come back to the story to see what the author has thrown in there next.

Over the long haul, though, once the novelty of storyline has worn off, attachment to character(s) is the only thing that will keep readers coming back.  Because of that, I’d have liked to know Iris a little better by this point.  I’d like to feel compelled to come back and read some more because I need to know how Iris is doing.  I hope we soon get to know Iris a little better.

In the meantime—if you’re looking for a fun read, you’ll find it in The Samhain Gate!
