Fantastic

Briefly, I love A Change in the Weather.

I love it because it has fairies and goblins and cockatrices.  Because the dreaded victory of the Bad Guys is palpable and I could feel my heart beat just a little bit faster in fear of the brave protagonists.  I love it because the author is fearless in letting bad, terrible things happen to the good guys.

I love it because there talking swords and dragons and Djinns.  The imagination that crafted this story is clearly seen in the characters, fairy tale elements that are familiar yet new, and in the echoes of folklore/myth. This is a fairy story that is grim and perilous and dangerous and, while being all that, it made me laugh and smile.

I love that the protagonists made honest mistakes that weren’t clumsily disguised as plot devices.  What a breath of fresh air!

I loved the edged lightness of the prose.  It’s real, it’s modern, it kind of reminded me of Lewis (but not in a derivative kind of way).  It’s written in such a way that adults and children can appreciate and understand.  The prose, the story, felt relevant, like the story itself was just ’round the corner.

Finally, I loved it because for the first time in a very long while, here was a story that drew me in, that kept me interested.  I wanted to keep reading, I wanted to read every chapter.  And I did.  And I enjoyed it full heartedly.

There are 76 chapters at the date of this review and I have enjoyed reading every one.

It is a delightful story involving everything you would expect to find in a modern day fairy tale and some.  Nothing is lacking – children, magic, dragons, legends and a bunch of bad guys [more . . .]

What can only be defined as classically modern.

‘A Change in the Weather’ is a story reminiscent of more classical tales, not necessarily in the language but just in the all round telling.  Think something along the lines of ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’ but modernized.  This reads like a story you’d see in maybe ‘The Canterbury Tales’ or any other fairy tale book.

A fairy tale for all ages

Remember when you were a kid, and there was that book you read—or that your parents read to you—that was full of magic and secrets and danger and adventure, and it sits there, even now, at the back of your mind, colouring in your dreams?  A Change in the Weather is that kind of story: dark and mythic.
