DEAD END STREETS

Full Moon Blues

Dead End Streets had me hooked from the first few chapters, and it keeps me coming back for more. The author takes modern mythology and makes it her own without losing any of the things that make a vampire a vampire, or a werewolf a werewolf. Her vampires hate sunlight and drink. Her werewolves are cursed to change shapes on the full moon into ravenous beasts. At the same time, they are not merely walking clichés. They are living (for a value of living), breathing creatures with cares, hopes and teenage angst.

Dead End Streets has darker themes, and addresses them fully and without glamorization. Abuse, assault and racism are used without being glorified or played for shock value. The writing is clear and engaging, and each character has a unique voice and story to tell.

Its pacing is very good, moving the story along without feeling hurried. The author gives the impression of encouraging feedback and engaging with readers. While some may not like a dark background with lighter text, I find it very easily readable.

In essence, I have this to say: it’s fun, it’s fast and it pulls you along for the rollercoaster that is high school. The highs are higher and the lows are lower than at most normal schools, but this school is not, at all, normal.
