(Review written after reading the first 10 chapters).
There was just something preventing me from getting in Hades Rising. The opening is solid – but since we’ve just been introduced to the characters, it is hard to be worried for them and the mortal danger they’re in. We get a bit from the father’s perspective, but since both parents are lost to the sea by the end of the chapter, it seems a little pointless. And confusing.
The following chapters are more linear, if slow – we establish where she is, that there’s a cute male nurse, and that she takes a shower. (A line of description in that section bothers me – it’s been established that it’s cold – hence, goosebumps and . . . erect nipples. I do not want to be thinking about the nipples of a girl who was just in a shipwreck. It just seems unecessary).
She gets the backpack that her father thrust on her in the first chapter – containing a plethora of items, which could be of importance, or just red herrings to think about – as well a diary.
It’s at this point where the story drops into flashbacks. There’s a demon for a moment, then it’s simply about a man trying to escape a murder rap.
There’s nothing wrong with the writing style, but at the same time, there was nothing compelling me to continue reading.
