SWORDS AND SIGILS

Magick & Muscles

Take a young wizard named Melkeen, add a sword named Sarta and sprinkle with magick.  Add a dash of rivalry and religion, balance it with masculine and feminine, divide with youth and experience and you have a good old fashioned piece of pure escapism!  Sword and Sigils is an enchanting story and I thoroughly chilled out as I whizzed through the thirty chapters posted to date.

One of the things I appreciate most about this story is the amount of attention to detail that has clearly been paid by the author. Take the names of the two main characters for instance, Melkeen, an apt name for a wizard and someone named Sarta, is definitely destined to wield a sword, rather than a broom.  Fantasy names that you can pronounce as well as relate to – what a delight! Never was my reading jarred by the language of the world I was visiting or interrupted by a need to go back and reread a section to make sense of – who was who – in later events.

There is also a wonderful balance between the two worlds of the wizard and the sword.  The magick is as you would expect—potions are mixed, carts have transport spells that do the job as well as make life difficult for novices, amulets protect and heal.

The fight scenes are exciting—the dance of swords combined with danger, blood and consequences.  So far there is a wonderful balance of sword and sorcery.  I have my fingers crossed that this will continue and look forward to discovering what happens next!

If you enjoy fantasy with cowls, towers, quests and intrigue you will probably enjoy Swords and Sigils.
